Natural Alternatives for Dysmenhorrhea

One of the most common problems affecting women everyday is dysmenhorrhea. Dysmenhorrhea is the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps. Other symptoms of dysmenhorrhea include nausea, vomiting, and a headache during menstruation. Since more than one out of every two women of childbearing age suffers from dysmenhorrhea each month, dysmenhorrhea has become the leading cause of absenteeism from work, school, and other activities.

Stress and Chiropractic

A recent survey indicates that 70-90% of people in the world suffer from stress. In fact, 90% of doctor’s visits are for symptoms caused by stress. Stress is not just in our minds, but actually has huge effects on our entire body. Stress is defined as an imbalance of bodily systems due to excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system; the fight or flight part of the nervous system.

Detoxification

Detoxification refers to the body’s ability to eliminate toxic substances that arise in the body due to metabolic processes or are introduced from the environment. The body eliminates these toxins either by directly neutralizing them or by excreting them in the urine or feces. Toxins that the body is unable to eliminate accumulate in the tissues, especially in fat stores. The liver, kidneys and intestines are the primary detoxifying organs.
Acupuncture in Action

On a first visit to an acupuncturist the patient may be surprised that the Western medical diagnosis for his or her problem is of little importance to the practitioner in forming an assessment. In fact, two patients with an identically named disease may be treated in a different way according to their particular pattern of symptoms and energy imbalances. After a detailed assessment which includes the patient’s responses, pulse and overall nature of pain or discomfort, an acupuncturist assesses and formulates the treatment. Acupuncture points are chosen with the use of moxibustion (an herbal heating method), heating lamps, massage and cupping (a technique that removes stagnation by the application of cups that create a suction effect). Laser therapy, ear therapy and exercise may be given to improve energy flow and restore the body’s own self-healing powers. Healing begins and symptoms disappear of their own accord. Acupuncture helps restore health rather than removing disease. Herein lies the major difference in the approach of Eastern medicine as opposed to Western medicine. The unique patient-practitioner relationship involved in acupuncture is what distinguishes and sets apart this medicine.

Osteoarthritis

There are over 100 identified types of arthritis. The two most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease due to the destruction of the cartilage found in the joints, effects over 40 million Americans. Rheumatoid arthritis is far less common, effecting about 3 million people in the United States. While osteoarthritis occurs in females and males at an equal rate, rheumatoid arthritis is far more common in females. In fact, three out of four persons diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis are female. Osteoarthritis will be discussed this week and rheumatoid arthritis will be address in the following article.
