Meet The Staff

Emmett J. Hughes, D.C., M.S.
Dr. Hughes is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic. He graduated Summa Cum Laude as the valedictorian of his class. Since then, he has completed the coursework for a Masters in Human Nutrition and a two year post-graduate certification in Classical Homeopathy.

As the owner and clinical director of Huntington Health and Healing Center, Dr. Hughes practices chiropractic, nutrition and homeopathy. He is the only certified Graston® Technique practitioner in the Huntington area. He employs a variety of techniques both traditional and alternative, including manipulative therapy, massage, physiotherapy, active release and various stretching techniques. He works closely with other health care providers in the area achieving the best outcome possible for the patient. As a educator, it is very important to him that his patients understand their condition and work in a partnership with him as active participants in their healing.

Dr. Hughes has been a member of the faculty at the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic and College of Naturopathic Medicine. He has also taught in the Human Nutrition program there. He has done extensive lecturing on the post-graduate level and for the lay public over the past ten years.

Dr. Hughes has also participated in treating the athletes at the Central American-Carribean Games in Cartagena, Colombia in the summer of 2006. This included teams from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Belize, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Dr. Hughes is looking forward to treating athletes at the coming Olympic games in Beijing, China.

Barbara Smith, L.M.T., A.O.S.
Barbara is a graduate of the Massage Therapy Program at the New York College for Wholistic Health Education & Research, with an Associate Degree of Occupational Studies. Subsequent to passing the New York State board examination, she established her private practice “Thera-Care Massage & Wellness”. Simultaneously, Barbara assisted a classmate in establishing a wellness center in Nassau County, where she still remains an active professional.

Her belief that massage can effectively be used to promote, restore and maintain health is evident in her treatment protocol. In addition to practicing European massage and Amma Therapy©, Barbara maintains practice in medical, pregnancy, infant, reflexology and Muscle Release Technique â treatments. The Muscle Release Technique© and medical massage are treatments for specific physical problems. These are directed to specific muscle groups, focusing on deeper layers of muscle tissue and result in the release of chronic patterns of tension in the body.

In September 2005, Barbara participated in a seminar for therapists working with cancer patients. Concern in the past that massage may spread cancer has limited the ability for the profession to provide massage therapy for people in cancer treatment. This seminar outlined the steps necessary to work safely, skillfully and compassionately with people with cancer.

Barbara believes that educating the public in the understanding and acceptance of massage therapy is very important. Massage therapy can be effectively used to aid in the prevention of disease. Massage therapy is the “mind-body connection” bringing physical and mental health benefits.
